School Uniform: Home Trends

Figure 1.--

Boys varied as to what they did when they came home from school. Some boys immeiately changed out of their uniforms. In some cases this was because they didn't like their uniform as thus a baromter of attitudes. Some boys just couldn't wait to take off their school uniform after school while other boys couldn't be bothered. In other cases, mums insisted that their sons change play clothes. They wanted theirvboys to keep the uniform clean so they would look smart at school. This occurred both for boys attending schools with uniforms an schools without uniforms. It also occurred at boaring schools. Some schools required boarders to wear their uniform all day long. At other schools boys could change into their regular clothes ("mufti") after classes. Trends varies over time. Many boys before World War II may not have hadspecial clothes for school. It also was affected by the age of the boy. Yonger boys were generally less likely to change than older boys. Trends varies over time. Many boys before World War II may not have had special clothes for school.
