Vanuatu Schools

Figure 1.-- This is a 5th grade class at Luganville Est Primary School. This is a French speaking school in Luganville, the largest town on Espiritu Santo, in the south-east of the island. Vanuatu has three official languages: Bislama, English and French. This school has a mandatory uniform. The girls wear green shirts with black shorts or skirts. The boys wear green shirts with khaki shorts. Footwear is optional.

Vanuatu before independence was a French-British "Condiminium" known as the New Heberdies. We know nothing about the schools during the colonial period. There were both British and French settlers with the French predominating. An independence movement gained strength (1970s). The islands became indeopendent as the Republic of Vanuatu (1980). The population is lsargely rural, although Port Vila and Luganville have grown in population. The Vanuatu population (Ni-Vanuatu) are mostly Melanesian with a few Europeans, Asians and other Pacific islanders. Schools in Vanuatu vary. Some require uniforms while others do not. The best knoen islnd is Espiritu Santo. We note a 5th grade class at Luganville Est Primary School. This is a French speaking school in Luganville, the largest town on Espiritu Santo, in the south-east of the island. Vanuatu has three official languages: Bislama, English and French.
