School Uniform:  Other Topics


Figure 1.--There are many ceremonies associated with school life. One of the most common in many countries is religious ceremonies. 

Several other topics touch on school uniforms and schoolwear in various ways. One of those topics is youth groups, many of which have strong connections with schools. There are a variety of ceremonies conducted at school such as classroom pledges, flag ceremonies and risings, and more formal patriotic ceremonies. Some schools make a major event out of a child's first day at school. There are all prize giving or end of term ceremonies as well as graduation. There are religious ceremonies associated with many schools. This is of course most common at schools affilited with religious groups. This can be both private and state-supported schools. The children often dress up for these ceremonies.

Ceremonies

There are a variety of ceremonies conducted at schools. Some occur in the classroom and are daily activities. Some are classroom pledges. At schome schools the schools give outdoors pledges as a group. In some cases these are combined with flag ceremonies and risings. There are also more formal patriotic ceremonies on special occassions, including national celebrations. Some schools make a major event out of a child's first day at school. There are all prize giving or end of term ceremonies as well as graduation. There are religious ceremonies associated with many schools. This is of course most common at schools affilited with religious groups. This can be both private and state-supported schools. The children often dress up for these ceremonies. Although in schools with uniforms, the regular uniform is worn. Some schools have special dress uniform.

Youth Groups

One of those topics is youth groups, many of which have strong connections with schools. We note that some boys wore their youth group uniforms to school. In some cases there were even special days for this. The Young Pioneers were esentially organized around schools and in some countries the school unifgorm was the Pioneer uniform. Here we have, however, only limited information. Many Scout groups, depending on the country were organized at churches and schools. Schools and churches were especially important in sponsoring schools. American schools also sponsored Camp Fire. The NAZIs, however, did not trust the schools. The Hitler Youth was organized independently of the schools and boys did not normally wear their Hitler Youth uniforms to school. this was not just matter of the youth group. Practices within Scouting, for example varied widely from country to country.
