Clothing and Costumes Worn by Child Actors: David Holt - (U.S., 1927- )

Figure 1.---Here is a Paramount publicity shot of David Holt, probably about 1934. He wears a self-belted shorts set. The girl with him is his sister Betty who also acted.

We have very little information on juvenile child actor David Holt. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida during 1927. David had a younger sister, Betty, who also acted. David worked under contract with the Paramount Studio. He was one of several children Paramount had handy to cover the child roles required in many of their productions. David appeard in quite a number of films during the 1930s. He generally had relatively small roles. He was not a child star who played lead roles or had films built around him. We know relatively little about his film career at this time. He was friends with Billy Lee and Baby LeRoy. David was the oldest boy of the three. We do know that David was in many films, especially during the 1930s. His films continued as a teenager and young adult in the 1940s, but not very successfully. His first fil role was in "Forgotten Babies" (1933). David appeared in many roles calling for him to wear clothing from other periods, such films as "Lasy Days of Pompeii" (1937), "Beau Gest" (1938), and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1937). Holt played the child "Flavius" in "Last Days of Pompei". He played next to Preston Foster. A film with a contemporary setting was "Straight from the Shoulder" (1936) with Ralph Bellamy. David played Johnny Hayden, Ralph Bellamy's son.

Clothing

We have only a few images of David Holt to assess the clothing he wore. His mother seems to have dressed him very smartly or at least he was smarly dressed in the studio publicity shots that we have seen. We see him wearing shorts sets. The one here looks to be white or perhaps a cream color and done with button-on shoers with a self belt. These shorts sets were popular for American boys in the 1930s and 40s. The shorts set is worn with stripped ankle socks. Other imges show him wearing sailor suits. We also notice him wearing a white beret with a white suit. Berets especially white berets were considered very fashionable for younger boys.
