German Boys' Hair Styles: Hair Bows--Styles

Figure 1.--This is one of the relatively few Germn portraits we have noted with a boy wearing hair bows. The boy wears a bow tied with tails at the side of his head. The portrait was taken in Berlin. I'm not sure when, but would guess about 1905. It's a little difficult to tell, but he seems to be wearing a fancy tunic and kneepants. We also notice different styles of bows. We note one boy with relatively small double ribbons (figure 1). We have also noticed German boys wearing large single ribbons. The boy here wears a rather large hair box (figure 1). The bob seems tied rather differently than the ones we have noted girls wearing. Small ribbons, often just one, were a very common style of hairbows for boys. In contrast they were not nearly as common for girls. These bows were tied in a variety of different ways. We notice bows both with and without tails. The small bows we have noted boys wearing do not seem to have tails. The boy here wears a large bow with a destinct tails.
