German Bangs: Styles

Figure 1.--These German brothers had their hair cut in bangs. Notice how short they are. The fringe on some bangs covered almost the entire forehead. The portrait was taken in 1959. Bangs were a style especially popular for younger children, both boys and girls.

Bangs for German boys were cut in many different styles. The length and styling of bangs varied somewhat over time. Here the difeerences include the length and direction of the cut of the front bangs. Some of the bangs were cut straight across while others were rounded somewhat. The length of the fringe could vary quite a bit. We note boys with long bangs cut almost to their eyebrows and other boys with front fringes showing most of the forehead. There are also differences in the hair styling at the sides. This can be independent of the actual bangs cut at the front, but is part of the hair style. Here the major difference is length. And this can vary from straigh-back-and sides to long shoulder length hair. American boys commonly wore bangs with righlet curls, but you do bot see this in Germany.

Front Fringe

Here the difeerences include the length and direction of the cut of the front bangs. Some of the bangs were cut straight across. A good example of a boys with very straight cut bangs is an unidentified boy in the 1920s. Another unidentified boy is a good example. Other boys had mangs that wwere more rounded or shaped. The length of the fringe could vary quite a bit. We note boys with long bangs cut almost to their eyebrows and other boys with front fringes showing most of the forehead.

Side Cut

There are also differences in the hair styling at the sides. This can be independent of the actual bangs cut at the front, but is part of the hair style. Here the major difference is length. And this can vary from cropped air or straigh-back-and sides to long shoulder length hair. Short cut hair was much more common than longish styles. American boys commonly wore bangs with righlet curls, but you do not see this in Germany. German boys in the early 20th century commonly had vlose-cropped hair. This became much less common after World War I. We note in the early 1920s boys with cropped hair, but with a small front fringe. More pronounced bangs were common by the late 20s, often with straight-basck and sides. When long hair begabn to become popular we see bangs with various hair lengths.
