The family was forced to flee the country in 1936 because of Hitler's persecution of the Jews. Photographs in the book give a good idea of how he dressed as a boy of about 5 years in 1932.

Kiddie Cart

We see Egon driving his kiddie cart or mail cart. His grandfather, Ludwig Walther, can be seen in the background. Egon is wearing a checked jacket with neckerchief, short trousers, beige long stockings, and high-top shoes.

Grandfather

We see Egon standing with his grandfather wearing a striped jersey with some sort of tie around the collar. He wear short trousers with brown long stockings held up by Leibchen with garter four straps. You can see the white button attachment (Waschknopf) to one of the straps at the hem of his shorts on his inner right leg. Note also the high top shoes.
