Hans-J: Garments--Sailor Suits

Figure 1.--I wore several sailor suits when I was a boy. It was my father who bought them for me. My father obviously was rather found of the sailor style as he bought them and sent them as gifts. I had severa different sailor suits in both short and long pants. I am wearing one of them here in 1942.

I wore several sailor suits when I was a boy. It was my father who bought them for me. My father obviously was rather found of the sailor style as he bought them and sent them as gifts. I do not recall if I had any special opinion about these suits. I had several different sailor suits in both short and long pants. I had dark blue suits in a heavy material for winter. I had another sailor suit for the summer. This was a light-blue suit in a light-weight material with long pants (figure 1). This photograph was taken in 1942. These sailor suits were used like suits for special occassions rather than play suits. I never had any sailor suits for play. Suits wore for best were called " Ausgehanzug ". My sailor suits were not precisely styled like German naval uniforms, but rather stylishly rendered in the sailor styles for boys. Other boys had similar suits. I wore these sailors suits a year or so after this photograph was taken until I was about 9 years old. I think I stopped wearing them because I grew out of them, not because I no longer wanted to wear them. Many had a lanyard with a tin whistle I greatly enjoyed blowing when allowed. While the suits were not precisely traditional sailor suits, I did have caps that were just like the ones worn by German sailors. I don't recall the cap I am wearing here, however, it looks more like a berret. One point here. Wearing sailor suits was not related to war nor navy. My father sent them. Probably my mother was glad to have a good suit for going outside (not playing nor school!). For my part I have no recollection in being especially interested in the naval aspects of the War because of these suits.
