Figure 1.-- Wei Kuo-ching, seen at a 1975 rally for International Labor Day in Nanning is Wei Kuo-Ching a Member of the all-important inner Politburo and a considerable power in Chinese politics. A few years later, Mao launched the Cultural Revolution.

Some Chinese Communists were Communists from the beginning. Others were KMT stawarts that changed sides during the Civil War. A good example is Wei Kuo-ching. It should be rembered that the KMT began asa revolutionary movement and after defeat in the Civil War, the KMT governance of Taiwan was more revolutionary than China as it not only brough its population out of poverty years before Mainland China and created a modern democracy which Communist China has still not done. Wei Kuo-ching was a Chinese army general and revolutionary politican. He was a member of the Chuang/Zhuang minority. The Zhuang people ( 壮族 ) are an ethnic group primarily but not exclusively centered in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China. They are the largest of China's 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. Wei Kuo-ching was born in Kwangsi, Kiangsi province (1906). As a young officer, he participated in Chiang Kai-shek's KMT Northern Expedition (1926). He defected to the People's Liberation Army. He served under Deng Xiaoping and became a close associate (1929). Deng of course would become Communist China's most important leader. Wei commanded a regiment in the commander-in-command of Peng Dehuai's Army Corps (1932). (Peng was another KMT defector an associate of Deng.) With Mao, Wei participated in the Long March. Wei was given command of a brigade of the New 4th Army (1938). He commanded the 8th Brigade of the 3rd Division (1941). Ge was given command of the 4th division (1944). He was a Generalmajor and negotiating with the Kuomintang when after World War II the Civil War resumes in full force (1946). He was asigned the task Quemoy island as a prelude to the conquest of Taiwan. He failed and Quemoy along with Matsu would play a role in conflict between Mainland China and Taiwan a decade later. He was a Deputy Political Commissar of the Xth Army Corps of the Third Field Army and Political Commissar. After the defeat of the KMT he assumed amore political role, becoming a mayor.
