Ethiopian Traditional Garments: Cloaks

Figure 1.--While Ethiopia is a tropical country just north of the equator. It can, however, get cold in the mountains. This photograph was taken in the Simien Mountains (Northern Ethiopia), one of the few African regions where it snows regularly. It shows a group of shepherd boys wearing the traditional Ethiopian cloaks. Also notice the caps.

One trafitional garment is the cloak. Like many traditional garments it is low cost because sewing amd fitting is not required. While Ethiopia is a tropical country, it can get chilly at night and many Ethiopian childten do not wear much clothing. And in mountaneous areas it can get cold, even snow. We are not sure where these cloaks are producedm, but we believe they are manufactured domestically. We see similar garments in other African countries. Many shepherd boys wear them.
