American Youth Groups during World War II: Junior Commandos

Figure 1.--These Junior Commandos are participating in a paper drive, probably in 1942. Notice their arm bands. Kosti Ruohomaa from Black Star--Library of Congress

The Junior Comando program modeled after the army was adopted by some youth groups. I believe that it was a program rather than a organization, but in fact have relatibely little information. There were ranks just like the Army. We notice some uniforms, especially caps, but are unsure if this was a standard uniform. The boys on the image here wear armbands (figure 1). Again I do not know if they were standard issue or made locally. Note that three strs designate a colonel abd two stars a major. The program included some phyical training and war games, sometimes with helmets and wooden rifles. I don't know of any actual weapons training. Other activities included paper and scrap metal drrives.
