British Preparatory Schools: Religion

Figure 1.-- These boys in the morning are getting dressed up for Subday chapel. Most boarding schools attend a nearby church as a group. Provision are made for children that are Catholic, Jewish, and other religions.

Many schools are associated with individual churches. Most are Church of England (CoE) or Church of Scotland schhols, but there are assocaitions with other denominations such as the Catholic Church. Some of the schools are now non-denominational and have no religious affliliation. These schools usually stress that while non-denominational, they are not secular. Children from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome at the schhols. Both the denominational and non-denominational schools, usually have a variety of devotional or chapel services and incourage the children to participate in Sunday religious services. Many boarding schools have a relationship with a nearby church where the school attends as a group. Special provision is made as needed for Catholic, Jewish, and other religions. The largest number of schools inEngland are associated with the Church of England and the Church of Scotland in Scotland. Other schools are associated with the Catholic and other churches. England like much of Europe has become an increasingly secular society, much more so than in the United States. As a result religion has become a relatively minor spect of school life at most prep schools in recent years. The religious tradition is now perhaps most emphasized in the Catholic schools than most of the other schools. There are, however, substantial differences from school to school. "Religious Studies" is a Common Entrance subject and thus forms part of the curriculum in the schoolc. It is taught as an academic subject. Some CoE officials complain that Britain is becoming increasingly secularized. Even within the religious community there is a tendency as one cleric complains "to take the devine out of religion". Some point to the schools. This is probably less true in the private than the state system, but the prep schools are not unaffected by these trends.
