Overseas British Evacuation of Children: Destinations--Caribbean

Figure 1.--These two British girls spent the War safely in Jamaica and are now headed home. The press caption read, "Going Home: These two little English misses, attired in typical British dresses [the editor mist be thinking about their school hats] and sipping bottles of milk, were among 65 who passed through New Orleans en route home after spending more thn four years in Jamaica. They're Margaret (L) and Barbara Hawkes of Yorkshire, and along with the others, were evacuated from their homeland to escape the Blitz. Some of the children were younger than Margaret and Barbara and could not remember their parents." The photograph was taken February 14, 1945. Most of the evacuees were not repatriated until after the War.

Some British children were sent to the Caribbean where there were several British colonies. We believe that the numbers were relatively small, but there were some. Only one of the CORB groups brought children to the Caribbeab. SS Orduna (Pacific Steam Navigation Company), left Liverpool on August 12, 1940, arriving Nassau in the Bahamas on August 30. It carried 16 children from Belmont Preparatory school, Hassocks Sussex. This is the only CORB group we know of that brought childrren to the Caribbean. There were also private movements with parents sending their children to familiy and friends in the Caribbean. We note some chilfren in Jamaica.
