World War II Finnish Child Evacuations to Denmark: Care of the Children

Figure 1.--Sweden and Denmark after the onset of the Soviet invasion launching the Winter War (November 1939) took in child evacuees. The War was fought primarily in Karelia, the Finnish bread basket. Food shortages as a result developed and conditions deteriorated for the children. Most of the children were taken in by Seweden, but Denmark took in 4,000 children. Here mothers and children taken in during the Winter War are returning home after the signing of the peace treaty with the Soviets (March 1940). This was just a few weeks before the Germans invaded Denmark. Here the children and mothers in Copenhagen are preparing to return home. Notice all the snow. The press caption read, "Finnish Evacuees to Return to Finland: Many families [meaning mother anbd child] who evacuated Russo-Finnish war zones to other countries are now returning to Finnish soil now that peace has been declared. These babies had been sent to Copenhagen during the height of the war, and boarded there with other families." The photograph was dated (March 27, 1940). Tragically with the Continuation War, even more Finnish children were sent to Sweden and Denmrk, often without the mothers.

Some 4,000 Finnish evacuee children were placed in Demark during World War II. We have however only limited information about them. We know a great deal about the Finnsh children Sweden, but very little about hose oplaced in Norway. We note mothers with babies and young children retuning to Denmark after a peace treary was signed with the Soviet Union ending the Winter War (March 1940). This was shortly before the German invasion (April 1940). More Finnish children wree placed in Denmark when Finland launched the Continution War with the Sovets as part of the massibe German Babbarossa offens8ve (June 1941). The 4,000 Finnish children placed in Dnmark were a small fractions of the numbers placed in Sweden. We are not enitrly sure why the Danes took in fewer Finnish children thn the Swedes. Denmark was a smaller country thn weden and occupied by the Germans. Both could have been factars. Perhaps the Dnes were less willing than the Swedes for some reason. We just do not know. As far as we know, the Germans had nothing to do with the decision. The Finns after all were co-beligerants with the Germans in the Eastern campaign against the Soviet Union.
