World War II: Soviet Literature--Maria Prilezhayeva

Figure 1.--One of our Russian readers tells us that Maria Prilezhayeva's book Masha Strogova's Youth describes her fate as a young school teacher during World War II. The illustration shows her consoling one of the boys from her class (6-th form). He's 12 years old. Boys in the class teased him because he came to school in short pants. They called him "a second former". The illustrator is Boris Dekhterev.

One of our Russian readers tells us that Maria Prilezhayeva's book Masha Strogova's Youth describes her fate as a young school teacher during World War II. We do not know much about her book at this time. Our reader has provided an illustration from the book. The illustration shows her consoling one of the boys from her class (6-th form). He's 12 years old. Boys in the class teased him because he came to school in short pants. They called him "a second former". The illustrator is Boris Dekhterev. Our Russian reader tells us, "This story is fictional, but it is based on actual events. Many families were evacuated from their homes due to the NAZI invasion. They couldn't take a lot of things with them. Often they fled with only the clothes that they were wearing. When they returned after the NAZIs were driven back, often their houses were completely destroyed. During the war nobody could buy any things in the shop for money, but there were special "orders", which administration gave to working people at their request but mainly as a reward. Some things people could exchange for food on the black market, but it was really expansive. So this is typical situation: family just returned from the evacuation, and boy's mother haven't got an order for long pants yet (as is written in the text of the book)."
