Reich Ministry of Propaganda: Foreign Material

Figure 1.--Goebbels Prpaganda Ministry (PM) followed the foreign press. Sometimes using photographs from foreign publications. Here is a photograph from 'The Atlantic'. The PM caption was 'The Mädchen auf Kanonenrohr- kommt gottseidank nicht öfter vor. An der Tower in London sucht sich dieses kleine Mädchen auf dem Kanonenroht eine Abkühlung zu verschaffen - sicherlich nicht gerade zur Freude des Wachtpostens. Atlantic--Photo, 9.8.1938.' That translates as something like, "Girls on cannon barrels do not occur more often thank god. At the Tower in London, this little girl is looking To cool off on the cannon - certainly not exactly to the delight to the guard on duty." yje photogtaph aspparently came from 'The Atlantic' magazine. We have no idea why ot inteested the PM. Perhaps it was just a delightful ,photograph, although the caption implies some distaste for disrepect toward the cannon and guard. And it dooesn't look yo us like bthebTower of London to us. The date is interesting--August 9, 1938. This was one month before Hilter launched the Czexh crisis which almost resulted in war. We are not sure if Goebels had been alerted to this.

We see the Prpaganda Ministry working with foreign images. Some were selected to conform with NAZI ideology. Others seem to have had no ideological content. We have found some images with captions. We think this represents images that were actually used, but we do not know in what publications. We suspect that the images were made available and it was up to the editors of the various publications to select what was to be used. But here we do not have details. Others were selected for public interest or entertainment just as was the case in most other countries. There seem to have been contractual relations with other magazines to use there material. We do not have much information on this. Atlantic magaine seems to have been involved. I am not sure if there were exchanges agreements. Some of the most NAZI images appearing in the American publications came from American photograohers in publications likr Life.
