NAZI Youth Organization: Deutsche Kinderschar (DK))

Deutsche Kinderschar
Figure 1.--One AZI Frauenschaft program was the Deutsche Kinderschar (DK). This was a program for younger children (6-10 years old) before they enter the Hitler Youth. There was no national uniform, but each group adopted identical clothing. The DK units met once a week for what was descibed as a 'homey afternoon' of fun and games. Unfortunarely we can't read the Gothic (Blackletter) script. Notice the Wolfangel emblemn on the banner.

The Deutsche Kinderschar (DK) was a coed youth orgnizatiom organized by National Socialist Frauenschaft ("National Socialist Women's League). We are not sure about the translation Kinderchar--something like Children's Character. The units were led by primary school teachers. It was a much smaller program than the Hitler Youth and the only youth program outside of the HJ. The DK units met once a week for what was descibed as a 'homey afternoon' of fun and games. , One source estimates about 350,000 children in the groups (1938). The program cointinued during the War. Unlike the HJ, there was no nationally established uniform. The children in each unit were dressed alike. The girls wore dresses. The boys often dressed like Dutsche Jungvolk unlike the uniform shown in the NAZI poster herer. The DK emblem was a Wolf's angel -- a runic inspired heraldic emblem. It was also used by the NAZI NSV welfare organization. It was a badg sewn on to the dress nodice and shirt. It can be seen here on the banner (figure 1). There was also a boy's belt buckle. The leaders wore a party pin with a red swastika. Participation in DK prepared the children for the more militarily organized Hitler Youth. This began with the childen turned 10 years old, the girls became members of Deutsche Jungmädel (BDM), the boys joined Deutsche Jungvolk (DJ)--the Hitler Youth Cub formation.
