English Clothing Companies

Figure 1.--

A variety of companies are involved with clothing. The two principal types are manufacturers and retailers. Information about these companies provides a great deal of useful information.

Manufacturers

A HBC reader asks, "Have you thought of including information about clothing manufacturers on the site? He points out two important manufacturers are Beau Brummell and Shortie. HBC would indeed like to add information on manufacturers to HBC. Certainly manufactuers have old catelogues and other valuable information in their archives. HBC has not yet succeeded in finding much information about manufacturers, but it is an area of interest. Two other manufacturers are "Trutex" and "David Luke". Both in 2001 made short trousers with 32" waist. The winter ones were linned and come down to a couple of inches above the knee. The summer ones were also linned but are shorter.

Retailers

HBC is also collecting information on individual stores and retailers. We had originally conceived of separate sections for mailorder and regular stores. We have since reassess this decission and decided to combine this information. Tis allows us to use the information to better assess fashion trends over time. Our information on English stores is still very limited at this time. Some of the most important chain stores carrying boys clothing is British Home Stores and Marks and Spencers. There have been other smaller chains. One HBC reader has provided us a copy of the Colts catalog. Colts was a store operating in England and other European countries during the 1960s and 70s. There are also local boys' and menswear reatilers. These stores often stock the uniforms for local stores. We do not yet have information on mailorder companies.
