Boy's Striped Shirt (United States, 1890s)

Figure 1.-- This pink, blue, and navy striped flannel shirt was worn by American boys in the 1890s. Vintage clothes like this are an important source of information on color, fabric, and manufacturing techniques. This is all information that can not be gleand by the black and white photography of the day. The color information is particularly useful. Source: Wisconsin Textile Museum.

This is all information that can not be gleand by the black and white photography of the day. The color information is particularly useful. Note the large, but not huge collar. We are not sure why the cuffs are done as they are. They were probably doubled over. We don't see cuff buttons. Perhaps cuff links were used. This is a shirt because of the shirt tails. Note they are not sculptured at the sides. Boys would have worn this shirt with suspenders. Note that their are no waist button holes are draw-string closures. This shirt is from the Wisconsin Textile Museum.
