British Royalty: Prince George--Sailior Suits

Figure 1.--Prince George is photographed here at about 2 years of age wearing a white dress whichbhe and his brothers wore as young boys.

King George V before and after the boys were breeched appears to have been particularly partial to sailor suits, first with kilt skirts and then as the boys got older, knee pants. I have not seen images of the boys in long pants sailor suits. As younger boys they mostly wore sailor suits. I am not sure if Queen Mary shared her husband's enthusisam for sailor suits, but she certainly saw to it that his wishes were carried out. Prince George after breeching appears to have alwaays worn long pants with his sailor suits. Perhaps he wore kneepants sailors suyits at an early age like his older brothers, but we have no images to confirm this. Both his blue and white suits in the portraits we have noted show him wearing long pants. I'm not sure when he first wore sailor suits, but he appears to be wearing them immediately after breaching at about 5 years of age. Notice the colored band on Prince George's left sleeve. When phitographed with younger brother Prince John, it appears on his right sleeve. We are not sure, however, just what it represented. Also notice how tghe sleeve bouces our over the cuff. I think it is one garment, the sleeves are long and the cuff is tight so the excess length spills over the cuff.
