Childhood

We have few details on Maximillian's childhood. Despite the political storm surronding the marriage of his parents, they had a very happy marriage. The Archduke was not known for his personality, but perhaos under the influence of his wife, he was a loving, affectionate father. Their happy family life of course ended with the assasination (1914). The children were raised as orphans, albeit with substantial assetts. After the War, the Czech Givernment seized most of the family assetts..

Education

Marriage

Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg (1902-62), married Countess Maria Elisabeth von Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee (1904-93) (1926). We do not know much about her at this time. Two of her brothers had been killed in World War I. Maria's brother Heinrich married Princess Maria Antonia of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Another branch of the Waldburg's married into the Hapsburg imperial family. Franz Josef's granddaughter Elisabeth 'Ella' (reportedly his favorite) married George Waldburg. As subsequently did her sister.

Children

Maximillian and Elizabeth had six children, all sons given the rank of Serene Highness.

Franz (1927-77)

Franz, Duke of Hohenberg (1927-77) married Princess Elisabeth of Luxembourg and Bourbon-Parma (1922--). He became duke (1962). She was a niece of Empress Zita. Elisabeth was the daughter of Luxembourg Grand Duchess Charlotte. They had two children, both girls. The first vgirl was Princess Anna (Anita) von Hohenberg born Schloss Berg (1958- ) married married (1978) Romée de la Poëze Count d'Harambure (1949- ). They had three children. They divorced (1998). She married again to Count Andreas von Bardeau (1957- ) (2005). There were no additional children. The second girl was Princess Sophie von Hohenberg (1960--). She married Artstetten Jean-Louis Marie René Ghislain de Potesta (1951- ) (1983). They had three children. Princess Sophie is activeky attempting to regain Konopiště Castle which was seized by the Czech hovernment following World war I. Her legal argumentbis that that her family (the Hohenbergs) which owned the castle was never recognized as part of the House of Habsburg. Thus the provisions of Article 208 of the Treaty of Saint Germain, and the Article 3 of Law no.354 of 1921 in Czechoslovakia, do not apply to her family.

Georg, Duke of Hohenberg, (1929- )

Georg, Duke of Hohenberg married Princess Eleonore von Auersperg-Breunner (1928- ). He became after World War II Austrian Ambassador to the Holy See. He became duke (1977). They had three children. The first child was Prince Nikolaus von Hohenberg (1961- ) He married Countess Marie Elisabeth von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg (1963- ) (1989). They had children. Princess Henriette von Hohenberg was born (1962). The second child was Prince Maximilian von Hohenberg (1970- ). He married Countess Marie Elisabeth von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg (1971) (2000).

Prince Albrecht von Hohenberg (1931- )

Prince Albrecht von Hohenberg (1931- ) married Countess Leontine von Cassis-Faraone. They had two children. Archduchess Margarete von Hapsburg (1963- ) married Carl, Archduke of Austria and Hungary (1991). She thus became a Hapsburg. They had children. Prince Leo von Hohenberg (1964- ) married Rosalind Roque Alcoforado (1964- ) (1994). They had children.

Prince Johannes von Hohenberg (1933-2003)

Prince Johannes von Hohenberg (1933-2003) married Elisabeth Meilinger-Rehrl (1947-). They had children. Princess Sophie von Hohenberg (1970- ) and Prince Stephan von Hohenberg (1972). Prince Stephan married Leonie von Kloss (1977- ) (2000).

Bailey was made OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in her Birthday Honours List in 2008.

Prince Gerhard von Hohenberg (1941- )

Prince Gerhard von Hohenberg was born (1941). Prince Gerhard was born during World War II while his father was interned by the NAZIs in Dachau. That means that his mother was also interned or his father allowed conjugal visits. This suggests that his conditiins of internment was reasonably comfortable, but we do not have details. He is one of the few children born in Dachau that survived. Prince Gerhard did not have children.

Post-War Austria

Maximillian was not legally a a Hapsburg and thus not subject to the legal constraints applied to the Hapsburgs. He was an Austrian natiinalist and spoke out strongly against the NAZIs. He was a prominant public opponent to the NAZIs and the Anschluss.

Anschluss and NAZI Era (1938-45)

The NAZI Anschluss thus affected their status when Austria suddenly became at of the Third Reich. The NAZIs had a list of individuals to settle scores with with when they marched into Austria. We are not sure just who was arrested. We know the Gestapo arrested Duke Maximilian and Erest in Vienna. I think they arrested Sophia as well. We are less sure about their families. Two of Sophia's boys were killed in the War. The NAZIs tried to arrest other Hapsburgs. Crown-Prince Otto spent most of the war years in Washington, D.C. (1940–44), after escaping from Belgium to Paris with his mother, former Empress Zita. They NAZIS interned the Hohenbergs in Dachau concentration camp for 7 years. Their Austrian properties were confiscated in 1939. Daccau in Bacaria was of course a deadly place. It was the first NAZI concentration camp and the template for the entire NAZI system of concentratiion camps. Most vocal opponents of the NAZIs did not survive. Thousands were simplly killed there. Conditions were so severe that most individuals for any time died there even if not executed. There were accomodations in Daccau for high-value individuals that were held in conditions that were survivable. Several other royals and other prominnt individuals were held sat Daccau. We do not have details on their experiences, Maximilian had a son in 1941, presumably at Daccau. One report says that they never really recovered fully from the experience. Ernest in particular died at a realitively young age. Their properties were returned after the end of the War and the demise of the NAZIs (1945).
