Crown Prince Rudolf: Childhood Clothes--Skirted Outfits

Figure 1.--Here Rudolf wears a kind of kilt suit, although it was not done in tartan. The pattern seems to show a Hungarian influence. Notice hoiw the kilt skirt has been carefully laed out for the photograph. The Prince look about 3-4 years old here. The portait was proibably taken about 1862. Notice the fancy pom on the donkey.

We notice Rudolf wearing a variety of skirted outfits. Some of them are difficult to describe because of the pose are the lack of detail in the image. At about age 2 he was wearing a kind of kilt outfit. Rudolf also wore dresses as a boy. There seems to have been some effort to coordinate his clothes with those of his older sister when he was very young. A portrait taken about 1862 shows Rudolf wearing an Austrian military cap and tunic suit. Notice how the stripped detailing on the pants match the tunic. Another portrait shows a different tunic which Rudolf appears to be wearing with dark knicker-length pants. This is somnewhat unsusual as most of the portrairs we have noted with tunics show boys wearing them with ligh-colored pants of varying length. Another image shows him on a donkey with a kind of kilt or skirt suit.

Dresses

Rudolf wore dresses as a younger boy. We do not have any images, although there are quite a few of him wearing other skirted garments.

Kilt Outfits

At about age 2 he was wearing a kind of kilt outfit. Rudolf also wore dresses as a boy. There seems to have been some effort to coordinate his clothes with those of his older sister when he was very young. Another image shows him on a donkey with a kind of kilt or skirt suit. While these outfits look rather like kilts or kilt suits they notably were not done in tartan. Nor do we note Highland trapings like sporans.

Tunics

We note several images of Rudolf wearing varying styles of tunics.
