Chinese School Activities: Games

Figure 1.--Here we see boys playing some kind of cooperative ring game at their school in Canton (southern China). The caption written by a Western visitor read, "Kids at the East is Red nursery school playing. Most impressive to me is the discipline they showed." We are not sure why the term 'nursery' school is used. They are clearly primary age boys. This game seems destinctly Chinese. You would not see Western boys playing a game like this. The photograph was dated February 27, 1973 which seems to be when it was used in a periodical. The photograph must have been taken earlier given the foliage and the way the childen are dressed. . This was during the final years of the Cultural Revolution.

We note images of children playing games on school paygrounds. We see activities that require cooperative behavior rather than competion. This seems to be the case for both boys and girls. We are not sure to what extent This what the children want to play as what the are told or ibstructed to play. In the West girls are more likely to be in volved in cooperatuve activity than the boys. One source mentions that the children seem very disciplined. We are sure to what extent children were allowed free play. We are not sure if this has changed over time.
