English School Uniform: Individual School -- Butlers Hill Infants School

Figure 1.-- The Butlers Hill Infants School was attached to the Butlers Hill Boy School in Hucknall (Hucknall Torkard), is a town in Nottinghamshire, part of the industrial Midlands. The Clss 1 portait here was taken in 1932. We are not sure what class 1 meant, we think it was the first year of primary school which would mean that the chilren were about 6 years old. Notice the board at the left awarding the class a 100 percent acolade, referring to attendance. English schools are a little complicated, at least compared to America where we have grades 1 through 12 in all 50 states. In both England and Wales there are Infant Schools and other types of schools as part of the primary system. This seems to be schools for pre-school and early primary years.

In both England and Wales there are Infant Schools as part of the primary system. This seems ti be schools for pre-school and early primary years. There are some difference, but the schools tend to be small and are for children from 4-7 years of age. They are coed schools. Some Welsh Infants Schools take children as young as 3 years. Children start at an infant school between the ages of 4 and 5 years in a Reception class. The pre-school Receptiom years are not compulsory. The younger children sometimes attend part-time (mornings or afternoons) for the first term. The initial Infant school year represents Key Stage 1 in the English education system. After Infant School, the children will move on to a linked Junior School with the older primary years. In addition to separate linked schools there are also Infants and Junior Schools combined under a single Head Teacher or Principal. This unites both of the schools in the primary system. The Butler Hill Schools appear to be one of these combined schools. In this case the children are separated by gender for the older primary years.
