English School Uniform: Individual School -- Burton Grammar School

Figure 1.--Here is the wood working class at Burton Grammar School in 1910. We are not sure about the school uniform, but most of the boys are wearing Eton collars and knicker suits.

We know very little about the Burton Grammar School at this time. We do have an image from the word working class in 1910. All of the boys appear to be wearing knicker suits, many with Eton collars. We are unsure just what the school uniform was. It appears that suits were required as all the boys are wearing them. Te Eton collars do not seem to be required as not all of the boys are wearing them. We do not know to what extent the school specified the type of suit. It looks like the school required that they be knicker suits, but we note one boy wearing long pants. Perhaps it was just that knicker suits were very common at the time. A reader writes, "I would surmise that there was no school uniform as such in 1910, probably just a schoolcap and tie in the school colours. Boys would wear the suits normally worn by lads of their class; knicker suits with Eton collars for younger boys, long trouser suits for older boys." That is what HBC had assumed, but there is more conformity in the image here than HBC had anticipated.
