Individual English Schools: Douglas School

Figure 1.--We note an image at the Douglas School, probably in the late 1920s. The image is interesting because the boys are doing exercize on the school ground. I think this might have been called drill, but I am not sure.

We note an image at the Douglas School, probably in the late 1920s. We are not sure where Douglas is. A large building in the background is apparently a hospital. Perhaps some of our British readers will recognize it. It looks to be a state primary school. The image is undatd, but the boys' clothes, including one boy wearing an Eton collar, suggests the late 1920s. The image is interesting because the boys are doing exercize on the school ground. I think this might have been called drill, but I am not sure. The image is interesting because it shows an activity at the school. So many early images are just school or class portraits.

A British reader tells us, "Douglas is the capital of The Isle of Man. The big building may be a large hotel as the island is a favourite holiday destination and lives off tourism." He points to an interesting internet page with information about historic schools on the island. The school here, hwever, does not appear to be listed.

Another British reader writes, "In the list of individual schools in England you list Douglas School. I note that you are uncertain as to where this is that you have recieved information that Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man, but that this school is not listed as being in Douglas. There is another Douglas in South West Scotland. It is a small village about one third the distance between Glasgow and Carlisle and these days it lies just to the West of the Glasgow to Carlile motorway. If this is not the place, then maybe there is a Douglas which is a district of some other town or city, it may even be in Northern Ireland for Douglas could be an Irish name."
