English School Uniform: Carrow School

Figure 1.--This photograph of Carrow School looks to have been taken about 1900. The children are the school's infant department. Click on the image for an elarged view.

I have little information about this school. I do know it was Carrow School. The photograph was probably taken about 1900. I believe it is an elementary school and the children pictures are the infant's department of the school. It clearly owes a lot to the kndegarten movement which had begun affecting England in the 1880s. The smaller children have a Noah's Ark to play with and seem to feel quite propriertory about their animals as they are holding on to them so tightly. The older boys are occupied with different crafts, including backet weaving and modeling. Many of the children have rolled up their sleeves and all wear protecive approns, similar to pinafores. Some of the children are very yoing, the little boy in the front row (third from left), still wears a dress.

The School

I have little information about this school. I do know it was Carrow School. I believe it is an elementary school and the children pictures are the infant's department of the school. I know it is the younger children at a larger school, because an accompanying shows 20 older girls. Apparently the younger boys and girls were taught together, but the older boys and girls were taught separately.

Figure 2.--This young boy in the infant's department still wears a dress. Notice his short hair cut. Another boy, the third from the left in the second row, also appears o be wearing a dress.

The Date

The photograph according to the source was probably taken about 1900. I might have guessed a little earlier, but 1900 is a good rough estimate.

Ages

The ages are a liitle difficult to estimate, but I would guess about 4 to 7 or 8 years. I'm not sure if elementary schools had set ages for attendance. Some of the children in the front, especially the boy in front wearing a dress do look quite young.

The Class

The class clearly owes a lot to the kndegarten movement which had begun affecting England in the 1880s. The smaller children have a Noah's Ark to play with and seem to feel quite propriertory about their animals as they are holding on to them so tightly. The older boys are occupied with different crafts, including backet weaving and modeling.

Figure 3.--The boy on the left appears to be wearing an Eton collar.

The Clothes

The children are clearly not wearing any kind of school uniform. Most of the boys are in the back rows thus it is difficult to see just what they are wearing.

Dresses

All of the girls appear to be wearing dresses. Some of the children are very young, the little boy in the front row (third from left), still wears a dress. At least on other boy also appears to be still wearing a dress.

Pinafores

Many of the children have rolled up their sleeves and all wear protecive approns, similar to pinafores. They look like small pinafores that the children may have been given at school rather than fullmsized pinafores that they wore to school.

Eton collars

The pinafores generally cover the boys' clothes. At least one boy, however, appears to be wearing an Eton collar. He is the boy on whose sghoulder the teacher is resting her hans.

Figure 3.--The boy's clothes are a little hard to make out as they are in back rows and wearing the protective pinafores.

Hair Styles

The boys all seem to have short hair cut well away from their wars. Even the two boys in dresses have short hair. The girls have longer hair cut at vary lengths. A few have hair cuts that make it a bit difficult to determine their gender.
