** Ulster Northern Ireland Armagh school 1890s

Individual Ulster School: Unidentified Armagh School

Figure 1.--> We also have a 19th century Ulsrer portrait, small unidentified school. We think it is a small private school, in part bedcuse of the different agds and how well the children are dressed. All we know for sure is that the school was located in Armagh in southeastern Ulster. The county is part of the historic province of Ulster. We see both boys and girls of different primary school ages. They look to be bout 6-13 years old. The portrait is undated, but we would guess the 1890s, based partially on the girls' dress styles. Click on the image for an enlargement of some of the children.

The studio was H.D. Taylor. There is no uniform but the children are all well dressed, much better thn you would expect from a state primry. The boys are wearing suits, although a few of the outfits are a little different to figure out. Afew have Eton collars. The girls wear dresses of various styles. Severral wear pinafores. One of the children wearing pinafores looks like a boy, but occasioinally girls also had very short hair. All of the girls have longer hair. There is also an infant boy wearing a white dress with a kitten on his lap. Presumably the adults at the left are the headmaster and his wife. The boy with the X is Henry, but we do not have his last name.
