Argentine School Uniforms: Influences

Argentine school influences

Figure 1.--An Argentine reader has sent us one of his school photographs at St. Andrew's, in the early 1970s. The school had a uniform that was indistinguishable from a British preparatory school. This is the 1st grade.

We have limited infomation on the development of Argentine education at this time. We note two obvious influences. The smocks commonly worn in public schools seem to show an Italian or Spanish influence. Smocks were commonly worn by school children in both countries. I'm not sure if this reflects a kind of official influence or meerly reflects the influence of Italian immigrants. We also note a British influence, especially at some private schools. We are not sure how extensive this influence was. We have noted a British style uniform at several schools including some Catholic schools.

Britain

We also note a British influence, especially at some private schools. We are not sure how extensive this influence was. We have noted a British style uniform at several schools including some Catholic schools. We note this British influence at some of the most prestious private schools in Argentina. We are not sure at this time as to how Britain came to influence Argentine schools. We do note thst there were very extensive commercial ties between Britain and Argentina.

Italy or Spain

We note one obvious influence, although we are not sure if the influence was Italy or Spsain. The smocks commonly worn in public schools seem to show an Italian or Spanish influence. Smocks were commonly worn by school children in both countries. Here we need more information. I'm not sure if this reflects a kind of official influence. Spain was the colonial power. It could also reflect the influence of the large number of Italian immigrants that migrated to Argentina in the late 19th and early 20th century. The smocks were worn at public schools and not mostly at private schools like the British-style uniforms.sch
