Argentine School Smocks: Chronology--The 1900s

Figure 1.--This photograph from the early-20th century was taken in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. They are a group of boys coming home from school. Notice the rather large lunch boxes. There are no white school smocks in sight, but one boy may be wearing a regular smock, it is a little difficult to tell. A reader thinks it may be a coat. They may be Italian immigrant children. We may be wrong about the date. There look to be trucks in the background which I tink would rule out the 1900s.

One Argenine source tells us that schools began using smocks as school wear around 1905/1910, byt not as general schoolwear. The were first used in practical classes, manual activities like carpentry. Then they were introduced in some experimental schools, although we do not yet have evidence of that. School portrits do not show show any children wearing white smocks. Some Italian immigrant children may have worn smovks, but our Argentine archive is not substantial enough to know how common that was.
