Boys' Paletots


Figure 1.--This drawing from a 18?? Frenc fashion magazine shows a boy wearing a paletot. The boy also appears to be wearing leggings.

A paletot is a cloak or coat. I have never heard of it before. I first noted the term in 19th centurty French fashion magazines. I note, however, that it also appears in some English dictionaries. This appears to be more true of English than American dictionaries.

I am not sure specifically what the characteristics of a paletot was. It does appear to have been primarily a French style. I notice the references to paletots primarily in the mid-19th century.
