American Fauntleroy Blouses: Types--Older-boy Blouses

Figure 1.-- These two brothers wear identical Fauntleroy blouses with dark piping trim. This is the style of Funtleroy blouse commonly worn by older boy. They were commonly done in patterns, the blouses here are striped. The studio is not identified, but the phogograph is dated August 1898. The cabinet card is one of the new styles which appeared at the turn of the century.

The second type of Fauntleroy blouse was not usually worn with the classic Fauntleroy jacket. They were often done in plain cotton fabrics rather than linnen. We do not see lace being used as it was so expnsive. We see large collars with both rounded and pointed collars with back flaps, There were various types of trim such as a lacy look or piping. The trim was usually done in white or contrasting colors. As far as we can tell, they were always done with back flaps. Unlike the classic Fauntleroy blouses, these blouses were commonly done in colors and various patterns. And they were done in older sizes than the classic blouses. We even see even younger teens wearing them. They were commoly worn without jackets. Some boys wore them with suit jacket, but not the classic Fauntleroy jackets for younger boys. The chronology of the older boy blouses was a little different than that of he classic blouses. We see boys wearing these bli=ises after the classic Fauntleroy suit and blouse had largely gone out of style. Our chronlogy is not yet defnitive, but seems to be about 1895-1910. These blouses seem very common at the time, perhaps more common than actual Fauntleroy blouses. They would have been the boy's dress shirt.

Jackets

The second type of Fauntleroy blouse was not usually worn with the classic Fauntleroy jacket. We see boys commonly wearing these blouses without any jacket during the summer. They were commoly worn without jackets. The boys here are a good example (figure 1). Some boys wore them with suit jacket, but not the classic Fauntleroy jackets for younger boys

Fabric

They were often done in plain cotton fabrics rather than linnen. We do not see lace being used as it was so expnsive.

Construction

We see large collars with both rounded and pointed collars with back flaps. As far as we can tell, they were always done with back flaps.

Collars

These older boy Fauntleroy blouses were highly variable. The one consistent feature is that the collars were all large, often ectending to the soulders and much of the top of the blouse. They also had back flaps. We are not sure why this was, but the classic blouses also had back flaps. Other than the size and back flaps, these blouses were highly variable in many other ways. We note both pointed and rounded collars. There were also some square collars without tips. We see these collars for only a short period, mostly in the 1900s when the Fauntleroy Craze itself was declining. We uusually date the Funtleroy Craze to 1885-1905, but wec see these lasrge collars abnd fancy blouses for older boys throughout the 1900s decasde.

Trim

There were various types of trim applied in many different ways. The trim omcluded a lacy look or piping, often with with frills. Now this decoration was no where near the extent of the classic Fauntleroy blouses for younger boys, but many were highly decorated. This was done around the collar and with a front placket. The trim might be done done in white or contrasting colors. Here we see examples with colored trim (figure 1). Most of these collars have some kind of frilly trim. we see a few without this trim, only a large sized collar. But we do not see very many, but we do nmot see very many.

Colors and Patterns

Unlike the classic Fauntleroy blouses, these blouses were commonly done in colors and various patterns. Unfortunately the black and white photography provides few hints as to the actual colors. We mostly see white blouses, but we have seen some dark blouses. Patterns are a different matter. The photographic record provides us detils about the different patterns. Striped blouses were popular which means mostly dark colors on white blouses. We also see other patterns like polkadots.

Ages

And they were done in older sizes than the classic blouses. Basically they were done in sizes for school-age boys. Here we mean oprimary school boys which commonly involved an 8 year program at the time. The boys here look to be aboy 5-8 years old (figure 1). We even see younger teens wearing them, mostly 13-year olds, perhaps afew 14-year olds. .

Chronology

The chronology of the older boy blouses was a little different than that of he classic blouses. We see boys wearing these bli=ises after the classic Fauntleroy suit and blouse had largely gone out of style. Our chronlogy is not yet definitive, but seems to be about 1895-1910. The cbinet card portrait here was dated 1898 (figure 1). We hope to refine this chronology as our archive expands. We have found portraits that are undated that definited were taken in the 1890s and 1900s, but we cannot further refine the chronology at this time. We do not see them in the 1880s, but the early-1910s is possible.

Prevalence

These blouses seem very common at the time, perhaps more common than actual Fauntleroy blouses. They would have been the boy's dress shirt. Usually gthery were worn wityhout a kackert, just the blouse and knee pants. It was a warm weather summer combination.
