German Sailor Suit Popularity (1890s)

Figure 1.--This CDV portrait shows an unidentified boy wearing a smart sailor suit, we think in the 1890s. He wears a school cap with his suit. Notice the single band rather than the three-stripe detailing. Also the scarfe is not tied the way that became so common in the 20th century. Also notice the longish-length of the knee pants. The studio here was O. Scholtz in Labes I/P. This meant 'Labes in Pommern'. Many German towns had the same name so had to be destinguished by Lander or a nearby river. This Labes was in Pommerania. It is now the Polish city of Łobez, about 50 km to the east-northeast of Stettin.

German boys wore a range of sailor garments. A sailor suit is compised primarily of a pants and blouse matching combination. Both garments and styling was still quite varied in the 1890s. Thus we see quite a mix of garments. The top is usually a blouse, We note pull-over blouses as well as button-up jacket shirts. Some of these had quite a number of buttons. The dickies were done in a variety of ways. Some mothers added a stigg collsar rather negating the basic idea of a sailor suit, a smsart casual, comfortable outfit for boys. We also notice various kinds of pants, including knee pants, bloomer knickers, and long pants. The blouse and pants almost always matched. There were also a range of headwear includig some matching caps. There were also sailor caps and hats that did not match the sailot suit in material and color.
