Katholieke Studentenactie (KSA): Uniforms

Figure 1.--Here is a KSA member wearing the current uniform with the destinctive bright blue shirt. Notice how the lanyard (cord) is wound arinf the kerchief. I believe this photograp was taken in 2003.

The KSA insists on a uniform. They appear to have a stricter uniform policy than many Europeam youth organizations. As in Scouting, there appears to be some differences between units as to how strictly the unifornm regulations are enforced from group to group. Many units, however, do not appear to give cosierable attention to the uniform. The KSA has no cap or hat as part of their uniform. The members wear blue shirts. The the girls who are in a separate but associate group wear light blue shirts and the boys bright blue shirts. Some members wear a dark blue sweater or jacket. Some members wear kerchiefs. Here the girls wear blue kerchiefs and the boys red and yellow ones. Many members do not wear kerchiefs. Members wear dark blue long or short trousers.

Uniform Policy

The KSA insists on a uniform. They appear to have a stricter uniform policy than many Europeam youth organizations. As in Scouting, there appears to be some differences between units as to how strictly the unifornm regulations are enforced from group to group. Many units, however, do not appear to place great importance on the uniform.

Garments

The KSA has no cap or hat as part of their uniform.

KSA

The KSA boys wear bright blue shirts. Many members wear kerchiefs. We havevnoted bots wearing red kerchiefs. Members wear dark blue long or short trousers. Some difference in uniforms exist because of the fushion of the KSA and VKSJ forming the KSJ. A KSA member tells us, "The foto you placed on the site is one of the KSA and VKSJ leaders from the groups of my region. Our groups work together but boys and girls continue to be organizational separate. KSA-VKSJ only exists in Flanders. We in our region (around Antwerp) still wear the uniform as it was worn earlier, before the fusion which took place in the 1970s. Boys wear a coloured whistlecord (each 'age unit' has a different colour (red or yellow, green, white, blue and black). Leaders have a whistle on their lanyard (cord). The cord is wrapped twice round the kerchief. Most groups wear short black pants, but there are groups who prefer a long pants. The boys have a leather belt with a belt buckle that has the Blauwvoet (legendary Flemish bird). Various KSA badges are worn on the shirt. There are no caps or hats. For the shoes there are no rules, but there was a period that it was common (mostly ammong the leaders) to wear black boots(army kinds) with grey kneesocks rolled down."

KSJ

After the fusion in the 1970s many KSJ (KSA-VKSJ fusion) groups wore lightblue shirts. The KSJ uniform contains a bright blue shirt, an orange kerchief (but the colour can have some variation caused by many washings).

VKSJ

The girls who are in a separate but associate group wear light blue shirts and the boys bright blue shirts. Some members wear a dark blue sweater or jacket. Some members wear kerchiefs. There are coloured kerchiefs, different colours for each agegroup, (red, green, and darkblue). The female leaderswear the darkblue kerchiefs. The girls wear dark blue pants (short or long). Leaders have a white lanyard with whistle. They have no specific hat or shoes. There is a dark blue uniform sweater. It is no obligatory worn by both boys and girls. Each group has maybe a litle variation, but in general wear the same (strict) uniform.
