Hitler Youth Shirts: Features

Figure 1.--The most recognizable feature of the Hitler Youth uniform was the brown shirt based on the brown shirts worn by the SA. Notice the epaulette on the boy's right shoulder. The triangular patch tells us that he was from North Nordm??? (Nord Nordm???). The lightening bolt patch tells us that he was az patrol leader.

The shirts were all brown long sleve shirts. They had flap pockets that buttoned. Many of the shirts we have noted had epauletes, but not all. The epaulettets are the feature of the shirt that we are most confused with. We do not fully understand these differences at this time. A reader writes, "It is interesting to see some DJ boys with epauilettes on both sides. I know most DJs didn't have shirts with epaulettes. The DJ shirt I own only has an epaulette on the left." We notice some shorts with epaulettes only on the right. Notice the boy here (figure 1). Notice the three stripes on his epaulettes. I'm not sure what that meant. There were also differences in the flap pockets. Note the flaps the boy here are scalloped (figure 1). Others were not. We also note that some of these pockets had verticle vents.

Sleeves

The shirts were all brown long sleve shirts. All the sleeves were long. They were used for patches. While they were no short sleeve shirts, the boys would roll up the sleeves during the Summer. This was mormally done in a uniform manner.

Pockets

The Hitler Youth shirts had flap pockets that buttoned. The buttons were large and look to be brown to match the shirt. There were also differences in the flap pockets. Note the flaps the boy here are scalloped (figure 1). Others were not. We also note that some of these pockets had verticle vents.

Epaulettes

Many of the shirts we have noted had epauletes, but not all. The epaulettets are the feature of the shirt that we are most confused with. We do not fully understand these differences at this time. A reader writes, "It is interesting to see some DJ boys with epauilettes on both sides. I know most DJs didn't hasve shirts with epaulettes. The DJ shirt I own only has an epaulette on the left." We notice some shirts with epaulettes only on the right. Here we wonder if some of the images have been reversed. Notice the boy here (figure 1). Notice the three stripes on his epaulettes. I'm not sure what that meant. The epaulettes on some shorts seem to be added on and not part of the basic shirt.
