Dutch Jeugdstorm: Stormers

Figure 1.--These older Stormer boys in their summer uniforms. Note that some of the boys wear long pants. The boys in shorts either wear short socks or have not pulled up their kneesocks.

Boys from 14 to 17 years belonged to the Stormers (Storm Troopers). The Stormers were organized to funnel the boys into the military when they reached 17. This was something that many of the boys and their families did not realize when they joined--especially in the early years of the occupation. They wore the same uniform as the Meewen, except they had the addition of a cross shoulder strapwith their belt, rather like the leather shoulder belts of the German Hitler Youth. On the left upper sleeve wore a sea mew badge with a circular background.

Age

Boys from 14 to 17 years belonged to the Stormers (Storm Troopers).

Consequences

Joining the Stormers was a very serious step. The Jeugstorm was not just a Boy Scout-type organization. The Stormers were organized to funnel the boys into the military when they reached 17. This was something that many of the boys and their families did not realize when they joined--especially in the early years of the occupation. Some of the boys coming from right wing families were committed to Fascism. Other noys were swept up by the propaganda.

Uniform

The Stormers wore the same uniform as the Meewen, except they had the addition of a cross shoulder strapwith their belt, rather like the leather shoulder belts of the German Hitler Youth. On the left upper sleeve wore a sea mew badge with a circular background.

Conventions

Several uniform details emerge from the photograph here. There are a few boys wearing long pants. Perhaps some of the leaders were allowe d to do so. HBU does not know just what the rule was. Did most of te boys wear shorts because shorts were so common or was there a special rule for leaders. All of the boys in shorts either wear ankle socks or have not pulled up their kneesocks. This is especially currious because it was a chilly spring or fall day. Most of the spectators watching the parade are wearing heavy overcoats.

Figure 2.--Notice the boys and adults in overcoats and other winter clothing as this Jeugdstorm group marches by in the summer uniform.

Seasonality

Some of the Stormers appear to have worn the summer short pants uniform even when it was quite cold. One group, for example, can be seen in their short pants and ankle socks even when every one else is wearing overcoats.
