Unidentified Boy (United States, 1840s)

Figure 1.-- The American boy here is unidentified and undated. We believe it was taken in the 1840s because of the clothing, but would not rule out the early 50s. The cap was similar to that worn by soldiers in the 1840s. The dag housed in a leather case is a 1/6th plate size. The boy holds a military-style cap with a large tassle. Put your cursor on the image to see the opened case.

The American boy here is unidentified and undated. We believe it was taken in the 1840s because of the clothing, but would not rule out the early 50s. The cap was similar to that worn by soldiers in the 1840s. The Mexican War was fought during the 1840s and the boy's hat here reflects military styling during the Mexcican War. The dag housed in a leather case is a 1/6th plate size. The boy holds whay looks to be a peaked military-style cap with a large tassle. These caps are also called Oliver Twist caps. The pouty little blond boy is sitting on a tole chair. He wears a belted, lace collared tunic. We see these small ruffled and other collars worn with both tunics and suits. What we so not know id hust what kind of shirt/b;ouse they were attached to, Note the belt on the tunic has no practical purpose. Decorative buttons run up his shirt sleeves and dress pockets. Under his tunic he wears long trousers with a bold pattern, what looks to be checks. Notice the hair style, parted on one side and then just combed straight over. I have no idea what the name of this style was. We will call it a "straight across" comb until we learn of a better name. We have seen it, however, on other boys in the 1840s.
