We hope that you find the HBC site interesting and informative. We have amassed information on a wide range of subjects from jourmalistic and scholarly sources which we have illustrated from our extensive image archive. A critical aspect of HBC is integrating this information from readers all over the world We would like to make our site available to you for free as an open access site. Unfortunately, the growing size of our site and especially the steadily increasing bandwidth usage as our readership increases has made this impossible. We need to ask you for your financial support so that we can continue to make our site available to you. The funds are used to defray the internet hosting fees and to support our research effort. We have made the subscription fees as low as possible to allow any interested readers to access the site.

Open Access

We have tried to maintain HBC as a largly open-access site. We have amaassed information on a wide range of subjects from readers all over the world and a wide range of jourmalistic and scholarly sources. We want the information we have gathered to be available all over the world to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, the growing size of our site and especially the steadily increasing bandwidth usage as our readership increases has made this impossible. There are substantial charges both for data storage and bandwidth. Bathwith means site usage. Essentially evertime you click on a HBC page, HBC gets charged for bandwidth usage. I know we are all used to viewing internet sites for free, but the internet is not free. And thus we need to finance HBC. For a while we used free services, but we quickly outgrew their size limits. In addition, the pop-up ads were both distracting and sometimes inappropriate. HBC is written for adults, but we know that many children and teenagers visit HBC as part of their school research assignments. Thus we do not allow any kind of outside pop-ups which are not only annoying, but all too often are in poor taste. Many sites finance their opperation by selling adds and pop-ups which install cookies on your computer. We do not do this. HBC is completely free of distracting popups and spywear that can cause all kinds of problems to your computer.

HBC Subscription Plans

HBC offers a variety of scubscription plans for readers. We have endevored to keep the prices very low and to create plans suited to the needs of our readers. We have a regular subscription plan providing full access for an entire year. We also offer a limited 1-month subscription for students and other readers who just want access for a limited period. And we have a library/school plan so that patrons and students can freely access the HBC site.

Regular Annual Subscription

As a result, we need to ask our readers make a small contribution to help maintain the site. The participation contribution is $25 annually. This is a very small fee and we have purposefully set it low so that anyone interested in HBC can afford to access the site. This gives you instant access to our huge website of more than 25,000 page and some 40,000 images. We hope you agree that this is a small price to pay for access to the extensive HBC archive. Andv you will not be bothered with advertisements, cookies, popuups, and heavens knows what that assault you on most webites. And we NEVER give out, let alone sell, your eMail and other information to anyone. As you probably realize, there is nothing quite like it anywhere on the internet. The contribution provides unlimited access to all of HBC, except the E-Book section. You can pay by check or use your credit card through the secure Paypal service.
Checks: Your check should be made out to "Apertures Press". (We accept checks in American dollars, British pounds, Euros, and New Zealand dollars.)
Credit cards: You can also use your credit card to contribute to HBC. Just click on the Paypal icon here. We suggest that you also send us an e-mail to ensure that your transaction has been processed properly.

Student/Short-term Research/Trial Monthly Subcription

We receive numerous requests from both students and parents helping their children with a wide range of school projects and researchers who just want to access a small section of HBC. Often these requests involve use of HBC to look up a very specific topic for a short period. Sometimes mothers and theatrical costume makers need to see the images to make costumes. Subscribers can look at large numbers of historical images from around the world to help prepare a costume. We like to assist with this and other educational projects. Thus we offer a trial HBC access for only $10 monthly. This will allow time to research a school assignment or specific historical or fashion question for a minimalm charge. Readers can also use this a trial subcription to test drivev HBC. We would like to offer free access here, but the costs of operating suvh a massive website just do not make this possible.
Checks: Your check should be made out to "Apertures Press". (We accept checks in American dollars, British pounds, Euros, and New Zealand dollars.)
Credit cards: You can also use your credit card to contribute to HBC. Just click on the Paypal icon here. We suggest that you also send us an e-mail to alert us and ensure that your transaction has been processed properly.

Student/Short-term Research/Trial Access Upgrade

Students and researchers after using HBC for a month often decide that they wold like a full 12-month subscriptiin. And while your 1 month student subscription is still active, you can apply the $10 fee to a full 12 month subscriotion for only an additional $15. Just click on the Paypal button here to make the upgrade.

Library and School Annual Subscription

We also offer access to libraries and schools for their patrons and students. HBC is a very valuable source for a wide range of topics, but especially children's issues, fashion, and history. There are few sites or books that can offer so much information at so little cost. The fee is $100 annually. This provides unlimited access for 1 year. The higher fee is for the substanial incrases in website traffic. Library patrons, teachers, and students who cannot aford a Student Access subscription may want to request that their librarian secure access by arranging for access. Special arrangements can be made for small schools or schools with limited funding for library resources. In such cases please contact the HBC Webmaster and special arrangements can be made.

Complimentary Access

We understand that even these low fees are beyond the capability of some readers, especilly retirees and students in developing countries. Thus we do offer complimentary access to readers who are willing to contribute information useful in building our site. This information can be contributed in whatever language the reader speaks. We are interested in both individual boyhood experiences as well as analytical papers on historical and social subjects. If you are interested, just send us an eMail and we can discuss it.

New Subscriber Notice

HBC send you an eMail with the access information with the access codes very shortly after you subscribe. Paypal is susposed to inform us when you make your subscription. When this happens we then send you the access instructions. This usually takes only a few minutes. Sometimes for reasons we do not fully understand, Paypal fails to do this. We thus suggest that after subscribing that you send us an eMail. This will alert us to your subscription and we will get the access instructions to you quicker. Just use the eMail link below to send us an eMail message.

New Page Section

Many of our readers like to know what projects on which HBC is currently working. The $25 annual contribution fee includes a complimentary new page alert service. We list all new pages on a monthly activity archive page. You can access the page and find out all the new pages that have been added. The URL will be provide when you subscribe. And you can always contact us if you lose the URL. The easiest step is to book mark it. Thus you can ibstantly see new activity at the site. Normally we add 100-150 new oages monthly on a wide variety of topics in many different countries. There is no aditional charge for this service. This is an optional service.

Material Contributions

We also hope that our readers will also contribute to building HBC with their personal experiences, insights and images. Reader comments and material are a major part of our website. Material from other countries in particular is very important to building our site. One of the interesting aspects of HBC is the opportunity to compare boyhood clothing and experiences to those in other countries. We have done this partially through published sources, but the personal experiences of our readers are invaluable.
