French Boy Choir Costumes: Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Francois de Versailles

Figure 1.--Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Francois de Versailles wear the standard French choir uniform, bkue sweaters, white short worn without a tie, blue shorts, white kneesocks, and black leather shoes. This is the uniform worn at many private French and Belgian colleges.

Many countries of Western and Central Europe have a long tradition of church boys' choirs dating back to the medevil era. One of the longest traditions is that of the French boy choirs. The choirs were associated and continue to be associated with the the Catholic Church. We do not know of any secular boy choirs in France. We have very limited information about the medieval era. We do know that whatever vestages of the choral tradition remained as France emerged from the medieval era, but whatever remained was destoyed by the Revolution. This all French choirs like he one here wre founded in the 20th century with the choir revival beginning early in the century.

Information

HBC has not yet been able to find information on Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Francois de Versailles. All we know is that it would have been founded some time in the 20th century. Versailles is of course located near Paris, but we are not sure the Choir is actually located near Versailles. Hopefully French readers can tell us something about the Choir. We have found a few images.

Uniform

The every day uniforms of French choirs have traditionally been blue sweaters, white shirts, blue short pants, and white knee socks. Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Francois de Versailles cvhose this traditional uniform style. This was simply the everyday school uniform at French private Catholic colleges at the time many of these choies were founded. This is the uniform worn by les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Francois de Versailes (The Little Singers of St. Francis of Versailles). As it has become less common for French boys to wear short pants, many of the choirs now have long pants uniforms. A few choirs, however, continue to wear short pants--although they often are extremely long at knee length. Some boys even wear their short pants below the knee. The boys wear shirts with destinctive collars.
