Tajikistan Children's Choirs

Figure 1.-- We have no information on Takistan boy choirs at this time. We do note that thev Tajikistan Turkish High School has a children's choir. This may be a Soviet-era nstitution, but we note that is was active in 2003.

There is a little tradition of children choirs in Tajikistan. Neither of the two important reigion have a tradition of children's choirs. Children's choirs do not appear to be a feature of Tajikistan's Educational system. There are music school which concentrates on teaching of musical theory and the playing of an instrument. The occasions for attending a performance of a children's choir a few and far between. Talking with Father Carlos, the priest of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dushanbe he told me about the First Music School of Dushanbe. Dushabe also has a choir for older teenage boys. The students in this choir are older than those in the First Music School choir. We note that thev Tajikistan Turkish High School has a children's choir. This may be a Soviet-era nstitution, but we note that is was active in 2003.

Religious Traditions

There is a little tradition of children choirs in Tajikistan. Neither of the two important reigion have a tradition of children's choirs. In many countries are related to religion, especially Christisanity. The two important religious traditions in Tajikistan are Islam and Russian Orthodox Christianity. We do not note many children's choir in Orthodox Christisan countries. In addition many Russians came to Tajikistan during the Soviet era when religion was supressed. Islam has no tradition of music as part of religious services.

School Choirs

Children's choirs do not appear to be a feature of Tajikistan's Educational system. There are music school which concentrates on teaching of musical theory and the playing of an instrument are easy to identify and I have written about these schools. However choir singing would seem to be an aspect of music which is in the minority and not very popular. There have been occasions when children have displayed their musical ability at the Opera House in a school orchestra setting or as a solo performer.

Performances

The occasions for attending a performance of a children's choir a few and far between. I had assummed that these types of choirs were put together for special purposes and disbanded. This was what happened with the Turkish High School Choir. It was disbanded after the celebration to mark a 10 year partnership. Another thought was that schools had choirs which only performed in school settings and not to performances where the general public had been invited.School 21 has a choir which only performs at its own school functions.

First Music School

Talking with Father Carlos, the priest of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dushanbe he told me about the First Music School of Dushanbe. They meet after school funishes in a delapidated building to make music. A good number of children occupy their free time learning the arts of music here. The school teaches children to play a variety of musical instruments. It is unusual in that it has a children's choir. It gives public performances. I first got to here about in January 2003. It seems that a children's choir had performed at St. Joseph's Christmas Carol service. The music school meets in delapidated buildings which had no working heating system until a donation allowed for its repair and to fix a hole in the roof. The school is also short of musical instruments. Despite these difficulties children learn to play and sing music to a high standard. Fortunately Father Carol had photographed this event and a photograph of the choir existed. The choir dress in their best clothes for a recital. This can be long panted suits, white shirts and ties or ja white shirt without a tie. The girls wear dresses and trouser suits.Younger girls have bows in their air and white lace collars.

Dushanbe Conservatory

Dushabe also has a choir for older teenage boys. The students in this choir are older than those in the First Music School choir. They are 14 to 16 year old. They attend the Dushanbe Conservatory. These boys were spotted by a a colleague who went into the Opera Theatre while they were rehearing their graduation ceremony. He was delighted by the quality of their singing.
