The colors of the jackets worn by boys doing Irish dances varies widely. Some boys wear white jackets, but colored ones are more common. Some of the jackets are black or dark blue. Other dark colors like burgandy are also popular. Other boys wear brightly colored jackets. The jackets come in a wide range of colors including bright red, green, blue, or even an occasional yellow. There are also a wide range of slightly more subdued hues such as greens and browns. Saffron is a common color for kilts, but rarely chosen for the jackets. Blue appears to be the single most popular color. There are also quite a few green kilts--perhaps suitably for dancing associated with Ireland. White jackets may not be as popular as the colored ones because they are difficult to keep clean. Then again the white jackets are just as popular or more popular than some colors. I'm not sure just how the colors are chosen. The mothers may discuss it with their sons or just order what they think is appropraite. It is unclear if the bright colors are more commonly chosen by the boys or the mothers.
