American Easter Traditions: Easter Portrait (about 1910s)

Figure 1.--Buying a new Easter outfit is an American tradition. Here we have an Easter portrait of an unidentified Detroit boy in his new all-white Easter suit. He looks to be 5-6 years old. It may be a tunic suit, but we are not sure. He has kneepants rather than the bloomer knickers that were more common ith tunic suits.

Buying a new Easter outfit is an American tradition. Here we have an Easter portrait of an unidentified Detroit boy in his new all-white Easter suit. He looks to be 5-6 years old. It may be a tunic suit, but we are not sure. He has kneepants rather than the bloomer knickers that were more common ith tunic suits. He also wears white long stockings and strap shoes. Also notice the elegant white gloves. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1910s. He has rather severe cut bangs. A reader writes, "One slightly unusual feature here--the absence of ornamental buttons at the hem of the knee pants. Also the knee pants seem a bit less form-fitting than was customary in 1910. Could this photo be a bit later--say 1917-18, when we begin to see the transition from knee pants to short pants? However, the design of the suit in general does indeed look earlier to me." Our reader may well be right. I at first thought the portrait was taken earlier, but on reassessment I think it could have been taken any time in the 1910s and even the early 20s.
