Hobby, Rocking, and Stick Horses: Country Trends--Scotland

Figure 1.--This CDV was probably dates to the 1880s. It was taken at the studio of William Lowden of Dundee, Scotland. The subject is unidentified, but looks like a boy. Note the helmet, it is a reproduction of a guard's regiment, I think the Grenadier Guards. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

Available Scottish portraits are quite similar to the English portraits that we have noted. we note no destinctive clothing or differences in the hobby horses. Clearly hobby horses were popular throughout the United Kingdom as well as British Empire countries. The portrait of the Scottish child here is quite interesting. Thehobby horse is a wonderful one. Clearly any small boy would become very attached to it. The child looks to be wearing a dark jacket with military styling over a lacy white dress. The hair is done in ringlet curls. We believe that the child isprobably a boy, primarily because of the helmet. the dress is one that a boy or girl might have worn in the 1880s. The hobby horse is an indicator as it was more common for boys than girls. The helmet appears to be a very accurate is a reproduction of a guard's regiment, I think the Grenadier Guards. Hopefully our British readers will know here.
