U.S. Boys' Marching Groups: Rotary Boys' Band, Independence, Kansas

Rotary Club Boy's Band of Independence
Figure 1.-- Here is the Rotary Club Boy's Band of Independence, Kansas about 1920. The boys are wearing Scout-like uniforms.

We note various groups sponsoring boys' bands in the early-20th century. The Rotary Club is a secularm service organization organized to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian services to the community. Here is the Rotary Club Boys Band of Independence, Kansas. The Band was founded in 1916 with 26 members, by 1923 it had grown to 105 boys. The Band played 14th Annual Convention of the Rotary International in St. Louis, Missouri (1923). The portrait here was taken about 1920 (figure 1). It looks like about 62 members. We think that many of the the boys are children of Rotary members. The Band leader in 1923 was Paul Goepfert. but we are not certain that this is him here.
