Boys' Play Clothes: English Trends--Frozen Ponds

Figure 1.--Here we have a Victorian painting. Unfortunately we do not know who the artist was. It is undated, but we would guess was done in the 1840s or 50s. The painting shows children and adults playing on a frozen pond around 1850.

There were a variety of winter activities in England and other countries. One was play on frozen ponds. We notice an interesting Victorian painting from the mid 19th century. We do not fully understand it. Playing on frozen ponds is now much more limited for safty reasons. Here we have a Victorian painting. Unfortunately we do not know who the artist was. It is undated, but we would guess was done in the 1840s or 50s. The painting shows children and adults playing on a frozen pond around 1850. Note several bigger boys wearing military-style peaked caps beating a group of smaller children with sticks. A British reader writes, "My thought is that its school prefects trying to round up the younger pupils who are enjoying their play and don't want to go back to lessons. Could just be smesort of game or even plain bullying!" Notice the youth in the foreground wearing a smock.
