American Seaside Resorts: Blaney Beach

Figure 1.-- Here we see three children, apparently friends from Swampscott, Masschusettes out for a fresh air outing during the winter. One is carrying a puss. They are on Blaney Beach. Two of the children are boys and wear kilt suits and coats. The glass plate negative is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1890s. The boys are John Blaney and Norman Albree. The girl who seems a little dubious about having her photograoh taken is Marion Wardwell. They look to be about 4-5 years old.

Blaney Beach is located at Swampscott, Massachusettes. It is one of five beaches. We have not been able to fund much information about the beach. The background does not tell us much, but there seems to be a seawall and small beached boats. Swampscott is located near Lynn and was a fishing port, but the beaches began to take on more importance in the 20th century. We notice three small children brought for an outing at Blaney Beach apparently for the fresh air as they are all bundled up. They could hardly play on the beach dressed as thet are. They have a cat with them. We at first thought that they found on the beach as people don't take their cats to the beach. But the puss seams rather at ease even being hanfled by such a young child. Perhaps the boy did take his cat to the beach. We had a wonderful cat that looked just like him.
