No American beach resort was more famous than Coney Island which was located almost in New York City. Here there was not only a beach, but an exciting amusement park as well. On hot summer days New Yorkers flocked from the stifeling tenamanents to Coney Island. Photograsphs from Coney Island show trendemous crowds of people. It is also a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment combined. It is located on the Coney Island Channel, part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of Brooklyn a New York borough. What is now the amusement park/beach was once an outer barrier island but became partially connected to the rest of Long Island by municipl land fills. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of some 60,000 people in the western section with Sea Gate to the west. Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach is located to the east. The Lower Bay is located to the south and Gravesend to the north. Coney Island is famous for the combination amusement parks and a seaside resort. The amusements were a major attraction in the days before air travel and theme parks. ConeyIslans was for the first half of the 20th century the bet know beach and anusement park in America. After World War II as the middle class moved tohe suburbs and had the money for more extended vacations, Coney Island fell into neglect. In recent years, there has been something of a revival. The MCU Park stadium has become home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team as the New York Cosmos professional soccer club. Coney Island has also opened new attractions among many existing ones.
