English Seaside Resort Towns: Birdlington (Yorkshire)

Birdlington
Figure 1.--Here we see Bill with his family and friends that they made at Bridlington in 1957. It was an image captured by a street photographer. Bill tells us that, "The Bridlington photograph shows the friend mum and dad made. We played with the daughter and my younger brother was quite fond of her. She was good fun but mum said she was quite naughty. We never noticed that."

Bridlington is a North Sea resort town south of Scarnborough. The town has pre-Ronan origins. It is located in East Riding near Hull. north of Hull. It is a minor fishing port and is especially known for its shellfish. It has a mix of small businesses, but the primry indstry is seasonal tourist industry. The fishing port was known as Bridlington Quay. A chalybeate (ferruginous waters, mineral spring waters containing salts of iron) spring was disccivered. This led to the Quay being developed into a seaside resort (19th century). The first hotel opened (1805). Wih the advent of the railroad, Birdlington became a popular holiday resort for industrial workers from the West Riding of Yorkshire. Bridlington became a popular family seaside venue, because of all rge attractions for the kids. There was of coure the beach with sand. A lot of British sea resorts had rather rocky beahes. The South Promenade stretches along a mile of coast. There is Kiddies Corner with its mix of traditional fairground rides overlooking the sea and a safe paddling pool for the little ones. After World War II, the British tourist industry was hurt like many English resorts by the advent of inexpensive air fares to Spain and other warm weather destnations. Britain has some nice beaches, but the cold water of the North Sea or even the Channel can not compete with the lovely warm water of southern Spain. Sport fishing continues to be a popular attration. A HBC reader recalls family holidays at Birdlington and friends that they made there in 1957 (figure 1). Birdlington is adjusting. There is now Treasure Island mini-golf with its pirate theme. More adventuresome vcationers can go pony trekking along the Old Roman Road with Woldgate Trekking and Livery Centre. Novices are incoraged. Another popular attrction for the kids is the Bridlington Bird of Prey and Animal Park where the kids can see meerkats, wallabies and more.
