Travelling on the train. It so impressed him that it was forever in his memory." Also notice the boy in the sporty striped blazer. Click on the image for a closer view.

English seaside resorts are famous for their holiday piers with a range of attractions. Often the attractions are centered on piers. The rides and other games particularly appeal to children, but there are attractions for the entire family. Blackpool has three piers. The North pier is the oldest of the three piers. It wa built in 1863. It is also the longest of the three piers. It was originally intended as a promenade, meaning just a plce for vacationers to walk out on for an ocean view, sea air, and to meet others. With the construction of Central Pier, the owners had to add more attractions which at first were theatres and bars. Unlike Blackpool's other two which focusd on the working classes with open air dancing and amusements, North Pier oriented tioward the 'better-class'" market and hosted orchestral concerts and 'respectable' comedians. It was the only Blackpool pier that regularly charged admission until 2011. The Central Pier was built soon after the North Pier in 1868. It has an array of attractions, amusements, shows and shopping, It is destinctive with a ferris wheel the iconic Big Wheel, but this is a recent addition (1990). There is also Blackpool’s Number 1 tribute show – Kings and Queens. The central location purs it at the heart of the Blackpool coastline. The South Pier inagurated as Victoria Pier is one of three Blackpool piers. It is the newest of the three piers, built in 1893. It is located on South Promenade along the South Shore. It has several amusement and adrenalin rides. It opens each year from March to November and is owned by The Sedgwick family. It opens annually from March to November and is owned by The Sedgwick family. A British reader tells us, "I think the image here is North Pier, but it is hard to tell. The piers have changed quite a bit since his photograph was taken. There are still three piers but I have not been on them. Will though the next time I'm there. There were quite a few shady characters about when I was there 3 years ago. They were being loaded into Police vans for being drunk and disorderly."
