Argentine First Communion: White Suit Styles

Figure 1.--This Argentine boy was photographed in his First Communion suit. It is undated, but looks to have been taken in the 1960s. The jacket is double breasted and seems cut a bit long, looking almost like a tunic at the bottom. The boy also has a white bowtie, shirt, knee socks, and shoes.

White suits were also a popular choice for First Communion in Argentina. We do not have a precise chronology, but they seem to have been especially popular in the 1950s and 60s. This is something we are still working in. They rather matched the girls' white junior bridal dresses. The white of course being particularly appropriate for First Communion as it is associated with innosence. We notice various jacket styles. Some jackets were rather long, but this does not seem to have been a common style. We see Eton jackets, single-breasted, and double-breasted jackets. The white suits included both short and long pants. The short pants seem most common, although this varied over time. The short pants white suits were often worn with white knee sovks which were seen as more formal than white ankle socks. We do not see long stoickings to any extent. We note both white and black shoes. The shoes seem to be the only item worn with these white suits that was not white. Some of the boys had fancy white sleeve bows. And we also see white gloves with esoecially formal out fits. The white suits began to decline in popularity during the 1970s as short pants suits became less popular and more casual outfits began to become more popular, at least for the boys. White junior wedding dresses continued to be populr for the girls.

Chronology

White suits were also a popular choice for First Communion in Argentina. We do not have a precise chronology, but they seem to have been especially popular in the 1950s and 60s. Many of the portraits we have found are not dated so this is a little difficult to assess. This is something we are still working on. The white suits began to decline in popularity during the 1970s as short pants suits became less popular and more casual outfits began to become more popular, at least for the boys. White junior wedding dresses continued to be populr for the girls.

Girls Junior Wedding Dresses

The boys' white suits rather matched the girls' white junior bridal dresses.

Symbolism

The white of course being particularly appropriate for First Communion as it is associated with innosence. This was of course why the girls' junior wedding dresses were invariably white. The boys suits were more varid. White was only one of the choices for boys.

Garments

The principal suit items were the jacket and pants. Boys unlike the girls did not have headwear. We notice various jacket styles. Some jackets were rather long. The jacket the boy here is wearing seemd rather long (figure 1). This does not seem to have been a common style. Most were of the jackets were of normal length. We see several different jacket styles. There were Eton jackets, single-breasted, and double-breasted jackets of course with many varied elements. The white suis were done with both short and long pants. The short pants seem most common, although this varied over time. Hosiery and shoes completed the outfit. The short pants white suits were often worn with white knee sovks which were seen as more formal than white ankle socks. We do not see long stockings to any extent. Of course hosiery is not apparent for the boys wearing long pants. We note boys wearing both white and black shoes with white suits. They are all low-cut leathr oxford-style shoes. The shoes seem to be the only item worn with these white suits that was not always white. The hosiery and shoes of course were not part of the suit, but could make a big difference in overall appearance.

Accessories

Some of the boys had fancy white sleeve bows. And we also see white gloves with esoecially formal out fits.
